The IEEE Students Chapter of NMAMIT on Aug. 25, 2010, had organised seminars on Indigenous technology development and opportunities in technical institutes and on Effective understanding and use of IPR. Mr. Sriharsha Salimath, Dhyuti Technologies Pvt Ltd, Bangalore was the resource person for the programme.

3-day workshop on Image, Audio and Video processing

A 3-day workshop on Image, Audio and Video Processing for the faculty was held from July 22 to 24, 2010 at the Shambhavi seminar hall (new block). The programme was organised by the Dept. of Computer Science. Dr. Niranjan UC, Director, Research & Training, MDN Labs, Manipal was the chief guest and keynote speaker. The function was presided over by Dr. SY Kulkarni, Principal of the Institute.
The workshop was designed to provide a comprehensive overview of facts involved in image, video and audio processing methods along with its real world applications and research problems.

The areas covered were:

• Basics of Image, Audio and Video files
• Multimedia Signal Processing
• Digital Watermarking – Image, Audio and Video
• Image Compression
• Video Coding methods.
• Medical Image Processing
• Research problems and challenges
• Applications of Image Processing

Lectures and practical/demo sessions were conducted by experts from industries and academic institutions.


Emerging Trends in Microactuation Technologies

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized a two-day workshop on "Emerging Trends in Microactuation Technologies" on July 23 and 24, 2010. The aim of this workshop was to deliberate upon the different emerging microactuator technologies and their possible applications in the manufacturing, measurement and micro devices, to benefit the faculty members from the academic community and professionals from the industry.

Experts from premier institutes and R & D organizations delivered presentations and shared their expertise on different topics related to Microactuator Technologies. The topics discussed were:

  1. An overview of microactuators and their applications
  2. Application of microactuators in micromachining
  3. Modeling of Piezoelectric actuators
  4. Microactuation in MEMS devices
  5. Piezoelectric actuators for flow control in servo valves
  6. Magnetostrictive microactuators for flow control in servo valves
  7. Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators and their applications
  8. Modeling and analysis of SMA actuators

NMAMIT wins Manthan 2010

The students of NMAMIT were the winners of Manthan 2010, a business plan presentation contest conducted by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FKCCI) on May 12, to encourage young talents.

JS Deeksha, K Deepa Shenoy and P Chetan Kumar won a cash prize of Rs.50,000, a rolling shield and individual certificates. Their project dealt with the production of bio-ethanol by processing agriculture waste.

Kaushik Nandan and Mithun Todakar of Siddaganga Institute of Technology were the first runners-up for their presentation plan on Knowledge-based expert system for diagnosis and treatment of diseases in coconut palm and sugarcane crop, while Sushil Kumar of Indian Institute of Business Management and Technology, Bangalore was the second runner-up for his plan to reduce fuel consumption in automotive vehicles by replacing metallic doors with carbon fibre doors.


College Day & Graduation Day celebrations

NMAMIT celebrated its College Day and Graduation Day on May 11. Dr. M I Savadatti, Vice Chairman, Karnataka State Higher Education Council, Govt. of Karnataka & Former Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University was the chief guest for the programme. Mr. NV Hegde, President of Nitte Education Trust & Chancellor of Nitte University felicitated the academic toppers and released the college magazine. The function was presided over by Dr. SY Kulkarni, Principal of the Institute.


PGFEST-10

PGFEST-10, the annual technical conference which is open to all postgraduates and research scholars of engineering colleges in the country, was held on May 7 and 8, 2010. The theme of the conference was Recent trends in emerging technologies. The objective of the fest was to provide a common platform to PG students of various disciplines of engineering to exchange thoughts, skills and techniques to enable symbiotic learning. The technical fest is also a platform for Ph.D scholars, to present certain aspects of their research work to the judges.


Programmes conducted by EDC

An Awareness Programme on TEQIP Phase–II for the engineering colleges of Udupi & South Canara Districts was conducted by the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) on April 27, 2010.

The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Sharan C Padashetty, Officer on Special Duty, State Project Coordinator and presided over by Dr. SY Kulkarni, Principal of NMAMIT. Mr. Aravind Kulkarni, SPFU, Bangalore and Mr. Krishnamurthy, Finance Officer, SPFU, Bangalore was the chief guests.

The EDC in association with the District Industries Centre, Udupi had organised a 1-day Industrial Motivation Campaign for the final year BBM students of Vijaya College, Mulki on April 22, 2010. The campaign was inaugurated by Mr. S Aravind Joshi, Principal, Vijaya College, Mulki. Dr. SY Kulkarni, Principal of NMAMIT presided over the function.

The following topics were covered at the programme:

  • Entrepreneurial qualities by Dr. Sudhir Raj, JKHSIM
  • Leadership qualities by Mr. Rajendra Bhat, International JC Trainer, Belman
  • Communication skills and How to face an interviews by Mr. Nandakishore S, Govt. First Grade College, Bantwal

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell in association with the National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD) had conducted a 15 day training programme on Lathe and Milling Machine Operation for the rural unemployed youth from March 29 to April 17, 2010.

Mr. IR Pai, Chief Manager, Syndicate Bank, Karkala inaugurated the programme. Mr. YN Salian, Principal, M.R Punja I.T.I, Thokur and Dr. NS Sriram, HoD, Mechanical Engineering, NMAMIT were the guests of honour. The function was presided over by Dr. SY Kulkarni, Principal of NMAMIT.


Dr. Kulkarni awarded the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan National Award

Dr. SY Kulkarni, Principal of NMAMIT received the prestigious ISTE Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan National Award for the Best Engineering College Principal for the year 2009 from the Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi. The award function was held on Dec. 18, 2009 at the NITK-National Convention of ISTE.
