Research Program

Dear Alumni,

The concept of a Research Program stems from the observation that the developed world constantly perseveres for the next level of creative excellence and the thought that India too puts in a great degree of effort through its noted institutions, but still falls short of its true potential. To harness this value is a humongous task, but it is worth some thought.

Presently, 600 undergraduates and 93 postgraduates pass out from NMAMIT every year. This equates to about 150 project teams, which have the potential to generate some innovation. Hence, in January 2007, we discussed the possibility of having a Research Program at NMAMIT, to foster original research work. The meeting involved the college management and some of our alumni, who have been actively involved in the implementation of this plan. The plan will initially depend on the alumni funding with the intention to be self-sustaining in due course. We have received some encouraging feedback from our alumni and are now at a stage where we can initiate funding.

Funding can be routed through Cheque, Draft or Wire Transfer (preferred). Please provide your Name, Address, Email, Telephone, Batch / Branch. This will be used to circulate the quarterly newsletter.

Objectives:

The main objectives of the research program are to foster original research work and create value for intellectual property, develop sense of scientific thought process and appreciation for the field of study, encourage application and entrepreneurship, develop value added skill sets in applied engineering, creative thinking, technical delivery, project management and team work and initiate public / private corporate participation in research.

Features:

  • The initial corpus funded by the alumni to target academic year September 2007.
  • Funding is open for students of any branch.
  • Funding will be 75% of the project cost or Rs. 25,000/- maximum whichever is lower. In the case of exceptionally good projects, we could consider revising the amount to be funded. The remaining 25% will have to be funded by the students themselves, to inculcate a degree of ownership.
  • Cost per project to be Rs. 5,000 - Rs. 25,000.
  • The initial pilot test to be about 5 projects (upto Rs. 1.5 lakh depending on the funding).
  • Students have to submit a 1 page proposal citing the Description, Objectives, End Goals / Applications, Resources, Costing and Schedule.
  • Shortlisted projects are to be presented (5-10 mins.) to the Committee comprising the faculty and preferably 1-2 alumni members (Net meeting).
  • Selected projects are to be funded from the corpus (initially due to smaller fund amount) / interest return on corpus (in due course, to make the fund self-sustaining).
  • The funds will be disbursed to the teams in stages based on a work completion report signed by the project guide.
  • Fund account will be based in Mangalore, and will be operated by the Alumni President and another office bearer / alumni.
  • The final report must be presented at the end of the project with the possiblity of research publications and an exhibition on a designated Research Day.
  • The project could be a potential new product, application or start for further research at the Masters or Doctorate level.
  • A quarterly report will be circulated on the Research Program.

Yours truly,

Avinash K.
